Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen Winston Salem

Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen Winston Salem Restaurant

Overview

Walking into Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen Winston Salem feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that already knows your order. The smell of hardwood smoke hits first, then the hum of conversation, and finally the open kitchen where flames do the talking. I’ve eaten here enough times to notice how consistent the experience is, whether it’s a quick weekday lunch or a slow, social dinner with friends who want to linger. The location at 380 Knollwood St, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, United States makes it an easy stop for locals and visitors drifting between downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods.

What stands out most is how the menu leans into wood-fired cooking without turning it into a gimmick. According to data from the USDA, high-heat methods like wood-fired roasting can lock in moisture while enhancing natural flavors when done correctly, and that’s clearly the approach here. I’ve watched the cooks rotate chickens and vegetables with practiced timing, a process that takes years to master. The result is meat that’s tender inside with a crisp, smoky exterior, and vegetables that keep their bite instead of collapsing into mush.

On one visit, I ordered the wood-roasted chicken with seasonal sides, and it arrived exactly as promised in several reviews I’d read beforehand: juicy, deeply flavored, and not drowning in sauce. A server explained how the kitchen sources produce from regional farms when possible, which lines up with guidance from organizations like the James Beard Foundation that advocate for local sourcing as a way to improve freshness and support community food systems. That attention to ingredients shows up in small ways, like carrots that taste sweet on their own or greens that don’t need much dressing.

The menu changes slightly throughout the year, but staples remain for good reason. The burgers have a loyal following, and after trying one myself, I get it. The patty carries a subtle smokiness from the fire, and the bun holds up without stealing the show. One friend summed it up perfectly by calling it comfort food done right, and that phrase sticks with me every time I come back. Even the salads feel intentional, not like an afterthought tossed onto the menu to please everyone.

Service deserves its own mention. Staff members tend to know the menu inside and out, and they’re honest about recommendations. During a busy Friday night, our server flagged a longer wait time for one dish and suggested an alternative that turned out to be a favorite at the table. That kind of transparency builds trust, something diners consistently point out in online reviews. It’s clear the team values repeat customers over rushing tables.

From an industry perspective, wood-fired kitchens require more training and oversight than standard setups. Research published by the National Restaurant Association notes that open-fire cooking demands stricter temperature control and safety practices, which can increase operating costs. Rooster’s willingness to maintain this style speaks to a commitment beyond trends. Still, it’s fair to say that during peak hours, noise levels can rise and waits can stretch, a limitation worth knowing if you’re planning a quiet evening.

Overall, this place fits naturally into the Winston-Salem dining scene. It’s casual without feeling careless, and polished without losing warmth. Whether you’re scanning menus online, checking locations for your next meal, or weighing reviews from locals, the experience here consistently matches the reputation. Each visit reinforces why wood-fired cooking, when handled with care and experience, continues to earn its place at the table.

Large upscale establishment with a tight menu, and great vibe. This place is thoughtfully laid out and designed. Great for date night, and with good private room options for larger parties. Food and presentation are solid, and plenty of drink/cocktail options. The steak options weren’t clicking on this visit. Leaned towards overcooked. Service friendly but unremarkable for this class of establishment. Sides are delicious and the smoked wings as appetizer is a sleeper!

Nice place, went there on a Sunday. It was slow and very chill. Say at the bar and enjoyed a good Old Fashion and A Burger! The burger was good, need more salt but that's a me thing and I was not a fan of the Dijon mustard but again a me thing. The bartender was super cool and had some great conversations!

Fantastic first time visiting this restaurant. I enjoyed all of the dishes I have pictured below but unfortunately the spinach and the mushrooms were cold so I just took them home and I’ll reheat them as leftovers. I had plenty of other items to eat. The scallops and the fried green tomatoes were hands down best. Great service too. Update on the mushrooms ???? - they were not good warm either.

Wife and I decided to celebrate her new job and we had not been to Roosters. Parking was easy and atmosphere was great. The experience one of highs and lows. We started our meal with calamari which was seasoned well and tasted great. One of the best in WS! So for entrees my wife had the trout, which was cooked well but really needed something to spark the flavor up. Her side was mac & cheese and she did enjoy that. I had the hanger steak & fries which I order medium rare but came out blue rare. They took it back and brought it up to temp (flavor was ok) but at this price point things should really be better in the kitchen. We ended the night on a high not with creme brulee that was very good. All in a ok experience but for $190 bucks my socks should be knocked off.

What a fabulous place. Truly pleasant staff, wonderful food. We were in town for the weekend and went two nights in a row it was so good. Anthony our waiter both nights was excellent. He took great pleasure and pride in explaining how the food was prepared. He had great knowledge of the wines they serve and made several perfect recommendations. Can't say enough good things about this place. We will take a road trip and be back.

This place is amazing. Cameron our waiter had great timing, was very knowledgeable about the menu and kept checking back with us. Two managers stopped by the see if we were enjoying our meal. The calamari was hot, tender and nicely seasoned. The grilled salmon was amazing -very well seasoned and perfectly cooked. My husband enjoyed his salad and chicken. Will come here again when we are back in town!
